On Metal casting.

 

When you search the net, you will find several sites, of people doing their own metal casting.

And not only low temperature alloys! Some of these people have made themselves a complete setup, in which they are actually capable of melting cast iron!

This is a highly dangerous  affair!

In the near future, some metal casting will be done in my own yard, but I will start of with something less,potentially lethal, then cast iron!

To that effect, some time ago, I have gotten my hands on an engine block ,from and Alfa Romeo. (The previous owner, thought ,he didn't need oil...)

 This is made out of an alloy that mainly consist out of Aluminum. The fact that this melts, at a temperature of some 800C° less then cast iron, has to give my attempt somewhat higher chances of success, and might help in keeping me out of the burns unit!

There are plenty of good books on making your own furnace and even your own crucibles.

But for the love of sanity,please be careful!

As explained in the "machinery page" the wood lathe was bought with pattern making "on the brain". We need to be able to make the wooden patterns of flywheels, engine cylinders and all manner of objects, that are part of the IC or steam engine we want to build.

The more information is shared and linked, the more chances we have of bringing a project to a good end, without having to involve "medical staff"!

In having to use a wood turning lathe, to finish a mechanics project, the inevitable happens. We as a "species" see tools! And we might as well admit it, to ourselves and the world ; in that respect, we are as bad, as a woman in a shoe shop!

Nice shiny chisels, made out of the finest quality steel...of course we are going to "need" them.

And while we are at it, we might as well set up a wood work shop as well.
